Lady and gentleman,

At the bottom of the Marian tomb,11 kilometers below sea level,

the following year, researchers were ableto collect samples from water and sediment.

What they found in the samples was – disappointing.

Because there, at the lowest location on our planet, the researchers found

an exceptionally high concentration of microplastics.

This is a talking example of how we humans leave traces,

even in places where no physicist has set foot.

But it also tells us something more:about the enormous importance of

research to increase and disseminate knowledge about our oceans.

Two thirds of the Earth’s surface is covered by oceans.

Yet, today we know more about space than what happens under the surface.

Less than one percent of the world’s seabed has been studied.

It is quite remarkable. Not least in light of it

central importance that the sea has for our major future challenges,

such as biodiversity, climate change and food supply.

That is why it feels extremely important to be here today,

at the commencement of the Swedish activities within the framework of the UN Decade of Marine Research.

As an alumni ambassador for the UN’s Global Sustainable Development Goals

I myself have had the privilege of spending extra time on sea issues.

Among other things, through the Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship initiative,

where the world’s ten largest fishing and seafoodcompanies have cropped arm with researchers

at Stockholm Resilience Center to create a more sustainable fishing industry.

One thing that the leaders of these companies
come back to again and again

is how crucial collaboration with the researchers has been.

And it is, of course, quite obvious:

If we expect leaders in politics and business to be

make, unquestionably make uncomfortable decisions to win the development right-

Yes, then they need to have a solid science basis for their beshut,

And if we expect people to join and take responsibility for the seas

then we must first give them the opportunity to understand how the seas work

and why these sensitive and strained ecosystems

is so very important to heat

I hope that the investment at the Universeum Ocean Science Lab

will be an important puzzle piece in this work.

With knowledge comes understanding.

And with understanding we can bring about change.
